HISTORY OF VHS ATHLETICS

Since capturing its first CIF-SS title in Boys Cross Country in 1977, the Valencia High School athletic program continues to make a name for itself throughout Orange County. While academics remains a constant emphasis at Valencia High School, the school is proud of its athletic program's success. To date Valencia High School has won 15 CIF-SS championships, been CIF-SS runner-up 22 times, captured 29 individual CIF-SS championships, and won 2 individual CIF-State championships

Valencia High School originally opened its doors in 1933, using Bradford Elementary School for its one class. In 1934 the elementary school burned down, and the high school was forced to relocate to Calvary Chapel. On April 13th 1935, ground-breaking for the new Valencia High School campus took place, and in the fall of that year the high school officially opened.

In 1935 boys' athletics became a member of the CIF-SS, fielding teams in football, basketball, baseball and track and field. Today, the boys compete in cross country, football, water polo, basketball, soccer, wrestling, baseball, golf, swimming, tennis, track and field, and volleyball.

From 1935 to 1976 girls' athletics competed in the Girls Athletic Association or "G.A.A.", they fielded teams in basketball, field hockey, volleyball, badminton, and tennis. In 1977 girls' athletics became a member of the CIF-SS, fielding teams in cross country, volleyball, basketball, field hockey, track and field, softball and swimming. Today, the girls compete in cross country, golf, tennis, volleyball, basketball, soccer, water polo, softball, track and field and swimming.

Although both the boys and girls teams had some success from 1935-1979, it has been from 1980-2008, that the school and its athletic programs have made their mark in Orange County. Competing first in the Orange League and now in the Empire League, the boys and girls athletic programs have combined to win 196 league championships, 14 CIF-SS championships 21 CIF-SS Runners-Up 27 individual CIF-SS crowns, and 2 individual CIF-State championships.
